Workshop Introduction

This workshop will convey knowledge about notation for the Asian instruments of the Ensemble AsianArt and also selected non-European instruments. As experience has shown, the simple transfer of Western instrumental techniques to Asian instruments seldom yields satisfactory results. Only the study of the traditional music of the instruments’ countries of origin and their traditional performance techniques can lead the idea of composing for this new sound-body in the right direction, which is also the aim of our workshop -- Understanding the instrument and its culture as a coherent entity.

Meanwhile, interaction with Western instruments is of decisive importance. Playing together is almost impossible without a willingness to rethink and change one's own traditions; the timbres and intonations of the instruments vary too much. And this is the beginning of the trans-traditional learning process that the workshop aims to convey.

After taking this first step, composers will no longer be limited in their imagination and desire to be experimental. The workshop will add an extra day to the schedule to learn about famous European string instruments, as experience has shown that there is much to explore with these instruments as well. Instruments that will be played include the sheng (Chinese mouth organ), the daiqin (Korean bamboo flute), the koto (Japanese koto), the gayageum (Korean koto), the janggum (Korean drum), the European string instruments violin, viola, and cello, Western percussion instruments, and a selection of instruments from the participating performers.

The workshop is divided into two parts:

11.-14 April 2024

In a jury process, four performers of non-Western instruments and six composers will be selected.

The six composers will present new works and develop programs for two concerts together with all the musicians (AsianArt Ensemble + four other instrumentalists)

Special tutoring

Over four days from April 11th to April 14th, the Asian instruments--Sheng, Daegeum, Koto, Gayageum, Janggu (Korean percussion instruments) and the selected instruments of the participating performers will be presented. During this time period, one day is specially planned for western string instruments and western percussion.

End of August 2024

Rehearsal phase and presentation concerts of the works at the Akademie für Musik Berlin and the Gesellschaftshaus in Magdeburg.

At the rehearsal phase, any issues related to instrumental handling, balance or notation will be discussed during the preparation and rehearsing of the works. (also playability or performability, soundscape and writing style) The very experienced musicians from the Asian Art Ensemble will coach and train the selected performers in a transtraditional way of ensemble playing.
